It’s hard to get more awesome than that.īut, for one thing, Cao Pi lost his badass dual-blade sword. It was the ultimate villain showdown for complete control.

There was one version of the game - some special edition one - where Sima Yi led a rebellion against Cao Pi, and that was pretty badass. So things weren’t all bad for him in that game. There was an interesting sort of rivalry between Sima Yi, and that was pretty exciting to see. He was one of very few characters with his own story, and he played a prominent role in a few others. This game messed things up for a lot of people, and while there were some who definitely got 6’ed worse than Cao Pi, he got hit pretty hard.Īs far as good things go, Cao Pi was at least still present in DW6.

The next game in the series was Dynasty Warriors 6. Even knowing everything I know now about the history of the time and the real life Cao Pi, I actually think that incarnation of him was pretty true to history.īut we’re dealing with Koei here, which means that nothing gold can stay. I had very high hopes for that character, and he exceeded every expectation I had. They never should have changed anything about him. There was even a decent chunk of the game where he was in charge of the whole Wei army.Ĭao Pi was perfect in Dynasty Warriors 5. Back then, he also got a lot of screen time, showing up in a lot of levels from Guandu onward. He was just a creepy, evil badass every time he was on screen. At one point, he almost cut Sima Yi’s head off for suggesting that he cared about this father. This was back when Wei was definitively the villain, and Cao Pi seemed to love being the bad guy. My wife thought he was really hot (before DW6 Sima Yi stole the throne).Īnd his personality was amazing. He also had kind of a creepy face, with very sharp cheeks and somewhat sunken eyes. Everything he said sounded creepy at best and usually it dipped into actively malevolent. It was quiet and a little raspy - extremely creepy. His hair looked pretty cool, he had a spiffy cape, and a just generally cool aesthetic. Being able to mow down large groups of peons without the inconvenience of dismounting was wonderful.

And as I said, Cao Pi ripped through anyone standing in front of him. Only Ma Chao, Pang De, and Zhou Tai did all of their attacks on one side of their horse, making it easy to devastate people from horseback. Most characters attacked on alternating sides, which meant that you’d hit someone, and then they’d jump up and knock you off of your horse before you could hit them again. He was also one of very few characters who could deal significant damage from horseback, as his mounted attacks hit people in front of him. He could freeze people solid (Lü Bu was screwed) and could take his swords apart to make for some really awesome attacks. Cao Pi had this really badass two-bladed sword with an awesome moveset. We’ve all had our 3K fantasies - this one was mine.Īnd I was not disappointed.

When DW5 came out, I could FINALLY live my dream of playing as one of Cao Cao’s sons. The same goes for OCs I could create in DW4 and DW4: Empires. When I played the Romance of the Three Kingdoms games, I usually used an OC who was one of Cao Cao’s sons (and slightly older than Cao Pi so that I’d inherit the kingdom when Cao Cao bit it). (This is probably due in part to the fact that my own father left when I was 6). I was, after all, Cao Cao’s biggest fanboy and I guess I’ll admit that sometimes I like to wonder what it would be like to have him as my father. Waaay back when Dynasty Warriors 5 came out, Cao Pi was the one I was most excited to play as. They actually got him pretty much right the first time it’s a shame they cut him in DW6 and never brought him back.
